Dr. Hamed Beheshti
Co-founding Boreal Light GmbH in 2014 in Berlin
Dr. Beheshti and his partner have designed and manufactured one of the most simple and highly affordable solar desalination systems with a great chance of operating safely in the most remote parts of the world. At Boreal Light GmbH, Dr. Beheshti has developed both technologies of drinking water supply and irrigation water supply for the off-grid parts of the planet. Establishing WaterKiosk Ltd has been the most recent initiative co-founded by Dr. Beheshti in East Africa to secure the access of local communities to products and services offered by Boreal Light GmbH.
Dr. Diego-César Alarcón-Padilla
Head of Solar Desalination Unit at CIEMAT-Plataforma Solar de Almería (Spain)
The Solar Desalination Unit (UDeS in its Spanish acronym) has the objective of new scientific and technological knowledge development in the field of desalination and thermal separation processes powered by solar energy. The Plataforma Solar de Almería (PSA), a dependency of the Centro de Investigaciones Energéticas, Medioambientales y Tecnológicas (CIEMAT), is the largest concentrating solar technology research, development and test center in Europe. PSA activities are integrated into the CIEMAT organization as an R&D division of the Department of Energy.
Dr. Mohammad Reza Alizadehfard
Technical Director at the OSMOTEC (an Australian knowledge-based company providing water, wastewater, health and safety solutions across the Globe)
Dr. Alizadehfard has 20 years of experience in chemical and environmental engineering. He has been involved in scientific and applied researches in water desalination, advanced water and waste water treatment using hybrid membrane systems. He has also teaching experiences in both universities and industrial workshops since 1986. He has particular expertise in all forms of Membrane Separation Processes, Conventional Wastewater Treatment, Advanced Water & Wastewater Treatment, theory and practice, which includes process design, installation, commissioning and optimization.
Dr. Jauad El Kharraz
Head of Research at the Middle East Desalination Research Center (MEDRC) (Oman)
He manages its research programs dealing with sustainable desalination technologies, water-energy-food nexus, and other water-related topics. He has more than 19 years of international experience (Spain, France, Oman, Euro-Mediterranean & MENA region) in water and science issues. Dr. Jauad El Kharraz was one of 40 scientists worldwide selected to attend the “World Economic Forum ‘Summer Davos’ for New Champions” in Tianjin China in September 2012. He joined the Global Shapers Community of the World Economic by July 2014 and he became the founding curator (creator) of Nice’s hub (France) to push young talents from Nice to develop projects of development for their local community. Moreover, he visited more than 50 countries around the world, chaired several conferences and forums sessions/panels, and served as the referee for many international scientific journals and international platforms. Dr. Jauad contributed to numerous projects funded by the European Commission, European Space Agency, USAID, and other regional programs (FP5-FP7, H2020, ENPI NGO, ENPI CBC-Med, LIFE…).
Dr. Pierre Le-Clech
Associate Professor at the UNESCO Centre for Membrane Science and Technology at the University of New South Wales (Australia)
He has been studying membrane processes since 1999, with emphasis on fouling in membrane bioreactors (MBRs). In 2003, Pierre joined the UNESCO Centre for Membrane Science and Technology at the University of New South Wales where he now works as an Associate Professor in the School of Chemical Sciences. He has researched many aspects of the water and wastewater treatments by membrane processes. He seeks to further develop the use of membrane technologies, through the development of new operating conditions, the optimization of the energy need for filtration, and the advanced understanding of rejection and fouling mechanisms. Pierre is one of the Associate Editors for Desalination and Water Treatment and on the Editorial Board of Membrane Water Treatment and Process Safety and Environmental Protection.
Dr. Erkan Oterkus
Professor (reader) in the department of Naval Architecture, Ocean and Marine Engineering of University of Strathclyde
He is also the director of PeriDynamics Research Centre (PDRC). He received his PhD from the University of Arizona, USA, and was a researcher at NASA Langley Research Center, USA before joining the University of Strathclyde. His research is mainly focused on computational mechanics of materials and structures by using some of the state-of-the-art techniques including peridynamics and inverse finite element method. Some of his recent research is focusing on multiscale modeling of stress corrosion cracking, underwater shock response of marine composite structures, failure analysis of electronic packages, collision, and grounding of ships, and real-time monitoring of ship structures. His research has been supported by various organizations including European Union, Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL), British Council, U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory, Samsung Electronics, Lloyd’s Register, Babcock, QinetiQ, ORE Catapult, KIAT, and Tubitak. He is the co-author of numerous publications including the first book on peridynamics, journal, and conference papers. Dr. Oterkus was a visiting professor at Stanford University (USA), University of Padova (Italy), Otto von Guericke University (Germany), and Nihon University (Japan). Dr. Oterkus is an associate editor of the Journal of Peridynamics and Nonlocal Modeling (Springer) and Sustainable Marine Structures (NASS). He is also a subject editor of the Journal of the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture of Gazi University. In addition, Dr. Oterkus is Special Issue Editor for Computational Materials Science (Elsevier), Journal of Mechanics (Cambridge), Journal of Marine Science and Engineering (MDPI), and AIMS Materials Science. Dr. Oterkus is a member of the editorial boards of International Journal of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering (Elsevier), Journal of Marine Science and Engineering (MDPI), Composite Materials, Annals of Limnology and Oceanography, Materials International, and Journal of Composites and Biodegradable Polymers.
